Outline: This medical school was relocated from a hospital in Fukaya City to the area in front of Fukaya Station. The challenge was to create a new sense of richness while securing the same floor area as before to accommodate the same number of students, even though the total allowable floor area was reduced due to the relocation. The exterior walls are made of extruded cement board, the same as those of the surrounding suburban buildings. Semi-outdoor places such as an inner balcony and an outdoor escape staircase surround the stacked classrooms with a minimum area, and activities are exposed to the outside.
