CONSERVATION OF HIDUCHI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Outline
The elementary school, designed by Masatsune Matsumura in 1958, was selected as one of the 20 best schools in DOCOMOMO JAPAN in 1999, but since that time there have been discussions involving local citizens and the Board of Education about whether to rebuild or preserve the school. In the end, it was decided to preserve the existing school building and build a new one. At the end of June this year, the conservation and rehabilitation work was completed. This book introduces this project, which took many years to complete, with articles by Hanada Yoshiaki, comments by the people involved, original drawings from the time of design, and newly taken photographs.
