NEW MATERIAL RESEARCH LABORATORY
Outline
This is a project to renovate a black bean wholesaler that has been in operation since the Edo period in Tanba Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture. Of the ten buildings registered as Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan, five, including the oldest building from the late Edo period, were renovated into shops and cafes in this first phase of the project. In the corridor in the courtyard, the structural framework was retained and the roof was covered with copper sheeting. For the extension steps, black stones, which cannot be collected nowadays, were used to resemble black beans.
