The annex of the library was constructed 46.3m below the ground using the pneumatic caisson method. The library plaza is an open space that forms the backbone of the Hongo campus, along with the plaza in front of Yasuda Auditorium, the main gate area, and the plaza in front of the Engineering Building No.1. The library plaza in the basement is used as a place for learning without bookshelves and mainly for discussion.
