This is a girder bridge connecting Dejima, which was a trading center with Europe during the period of Japan's national isolation, and Edo-machi on the opposite bank of the river. The 4.5m-long stone bridge, which used to be the only traffic line to Dejima, had been removed when the river was widened by the subsequent construction of a new channel, and a new 38.5m-long bridge was built for the first time in 130 years. The new bridge, 38.5m in length, was built for the first time in about 130 years. Since the abutment cannot be installed on the seawall of Dejima, which is a designated national archaeological site, the bridge was constructed by cantilevering 33.3m from the abutment on the Edomachi side.
