The Asahikawa station building was reconstructed as part of the urban development plan for the area surrounding Asahikawa Station, which has been ongoing since 1991, and includes land readjustment, an elevated railway project, and the development of a north-south line of traffic across the station. The large roof, 180m wide and 60m deep, hangs over the elevated railway tracks. The entire surface is covered with a glass curtain wall, through which the four-pronged pillars of the platform floor and the plank walls of the first floor can be seen.
