Facing the Omotesando approach to Todaiji Temple, the museum is located right next to the Nandaimon gate. It is a facility that consolidates, preserves, repairs, and researches the treasures and books owned by Todaiji, and is open to the public as a museum. It was built on the site of the former Todaiji School, which had been relocated, after renovating the gymnasium. The Todaiji Museum, where national treasures are displayed, is built on a seismic isolation system to protect the collection and the remains beneath the site. In order to harmonize with the historical surroundings of Todaiji Temple and to preserve the temple's assets for many years to come, we adopted the latest technology to prevent moisture and insect damage while incorporating traditional designs. The exterior is mainly made of cast aluminum, which develops its own texture over time. The roof tiles are made of genuine roof tiles and decorated with patterns traditionally used in Todaiji temples. The lumber is made from domestic timber from a clearly defined production area, dried at a low temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. The use of paints has been reduced and permeable paints have been adopted.
