Outline
This is a courtyard-type housing complex on a 933.98m2 site in Kichijoji, Tokyo, consisting of 13 rental and owner-occupied units, each of which is approached from a courtyard. To prevent the large 50-meter-long volume from becoming oppressive, a ring-shaped art work by Noe Aoki is attached to the wall on the street side. In the courtyard, the color of the bricks, the size of the stairs, and the lighting are designed to create a landscape of the dwelling units and common spaces. In addition, the exterior walls and boundary walls are designed with openings to allow for future changes in use and expansion of the dwelling units, and the concrete and sound insulation walls that fill the openings can be demolished.
