NAITO ARCHITECT & ASSOCIATES, TORAYA ICHIJO
Outline
This is a facility that adds a gallery and other facilities to the existing confectionary production and coffee shop spaces at the birthplace of Toraya, near the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The ceiling of the cafe Toraya Kagayo is made of laminated Japanese cedar arranged at 150mm intervals, which also acts as a structural member to bear compressive forces. Light pours in from the top light on the roof. An alley runs around the perimeter of the site, leading to a garden that makes the most of the existing trees.
