This research institute is located in a semi-industrial area in Kohoku-ku, Yokohama. In the midst of buildings of various scales, such as private houses, apartment buildings, and factories, the exterior of the building is divided into terraced volumes to create consistency with the surrounding area. In addition, a pergola is set up between the neighboring houses as a buffer zone. Inside the building, a research design area with a series of vaults is arranged facing a lobby with a large atrium, and visually the space is composed as a continuous space up to the buffer zone of the pergola.
