CHURCH SUN-PU

TAIRA NISHIZAWA ARCHITECTS
Outline
A Christian Protestant church rebuilt on a corner lot along a railroad track in Shizuoka City. Light reacts to the exterior walls of red cedar split-skin panels. The 760 mm thick walls of the chapel control light and sound. The inner walls of the chapel become narrower toward the top, and the upper part of the walls and the ceiling are covered with wooden louvers of 18 mm in width. Depending on the time of day, various light effects are obtained, such as soft gauze-like light and the mirage-like appearance of the wooden trusses behind the interior walls.
