Outline
A 70-year-old machiya with a frontage of two rooms and a depth of five rooms facing the Shirakawa River running through Kyoto was renovated into a guesthouse. Except for the structure and the roof, the facade and the interior of the house have been modified to allow the wind to flow from the riverside view to the tsuboniwa (small garden), while using materials that evoke the old traditions of the machiya to create a modern setting.
