House in Kaizawa

Takashi Fujino/Ikimono Architects
Outline
The 38-year-old house of Mr. Fujino's parents was renovated in eight years of design and one and a half years of construction. The central part of the roof, the second floor below it, and the first floor were removed, and the roof was top-lit with paired glass and the floor was paved with sandy soil. By renovating the building, the past and present are made continuous, and the residents will continue to live in the building while continuing to modify it. As an expression of this continuity, old wood and new wood are treated equally and painted in a gradation, and cloth, paint, and veneer are used as finishing materials to create a state that is easy to modify.
