This 15142m2 addition to the former Media Laboratory (designed by I.M. Pei) on the MIT campus is an 11-year project that began in 1998. The project began in 1998 and took eleven years to complete. The atrium space, glass screens, and open atrium are designed to encourage collaborative research, as is typical of the MIT Media Laboratory, where there are no barriers between different research groups and where each group's discussions stimulate each other's research activities.
